Extreme Home Makeover - Math Edition
Students will be creating a home makeover by using house floor plans and other design aspects to create a house that is both aesthetically pleasing and cost-efficient. Students will use geometric and other mathematical concepts as well as research, fine planning and social interaction to complete their project and prove to others why their floor plan deserves the title of "winner of Extreme Home Makeover-Math Edition".

Lesson Progression
First day-
-Begin day by telling students they will be participating in "Extreme Home Makeover- Math Edition".
-Give students directions to what they will be doing and what must be present in their project.
For Example:
-The floor plan should have at least 1,500 square feet. All of the rooms should also have different dimensions. If a student draws the floor plan, it should look proportional to the measurements they are giving. The walls can be a certain height if the teacher chooses, or the students may choose.
-You will tell students that they have a budget of $20,000 (or whatever you see as reasonable).
-They will have to put flooring in their house as well as paint the walls. The end goal is to determine how much flooring they will need as well as paint. They also must keep the total sum of all materials under the budget you gave them.
-Play Kahn Academy video for an "easy review" for students to allow them to remember correct ways to calculate area and perimeter in terms of floor plans.
-Students will pick their house floor plan. Students may either draw their own floor plans or they may find one on the internet. (Students can type in floor plans on google images and many options are available). If time is an issue, it would be more efficient to use a floor plan; however, students’ creativity comes out when they draw their own.
-Students will do conversions to find the area of the different rooms and collect all the data needed to “buy” their supplies.
-Students will also most likely have to research information such as: how many square feet are in a gallon of paint, how much the flooring they like costs, the most price-efficient company, etc.
-Once students do research, they will keep information on the items they chose, the price, the amount they purchased, etc. in a math notebook or laptop.
Second Day-
-Students will complete math calculations about how much all of their materials will cost.
-Once they complete all of the calculations for the total net price, they will create their “dream board”.
-The dream board will include the paint colors they chose, the types of flooring, how much their total process costs, as well as a picture of their floor plan. This could be on a computer, or on an actual poster board. Allow students to be creative.
Third-Day-
-Students will present their work and try to “persuade” other students that their layout/ designs are the most aesthetically pleasing, and the most money efficient.
-Optional* Teacher can have students vote on different awards for the house plans to make it more of a competition.
