Lesson Progression

1. Ask students what the meal is that comes after lunch. When they say dinner, say that is correct. You recognize the pattern of breakfast, lunch, dinner.

2. Place 2 examples of AB color patterns on the board. Ask students what they notice about these two pictures. Students should be able to natural discover and converse about patterns.

3. Under a document camera or at the front of the room, give students a pattern using plastic eggs in a carton to identify. 

4. Give students plastic eggs and egg cartons. Tell them to create an AB patterns. Move to an AAB pattern, ABB, ABC, etc. 

5. Once students have shown mastery, provide a worksheet (linked in the resources tab) to check for understanding.

extension: Give students increasingly complex patterns to explain and create.

differentiation: Focus in on AB patterns.
