Dividing Fractions
These slides can be used to teach students to problem solve when dividing fractions. Different scenarios are provided (whole number divided by unit fraction, fraction divided by a whole number, and whole number divided by whole number.) Models, fraction tiles, drawings, and algorithms can be used to solve.
Essential Question
What method can be used to divide fractional values?
How can this method be applied to real world scenarios?
Lesson Progression
This is a 3-day series to help students recognize whole numbers divided by whole numbers being represented by fractions, and whole numbers divided by fractions.
Day 1 - give students fraction tiles and let them work together to solve the problems.
Day 2 - Have students draw the models to solve. (Drawing rectangles is most beneficial. For example, 3 divided by 1/4 - draw 3 rectangles split into fourths. Students should count the pieces and say there are 12).
Day 3 - Extra practice. Students can choose to use fraction tiles or drawn models. Students should move to independence at this point.
Teacher Notes
Differentiation: Begin with visual manipulatives (consider fraction tile overlays).
Extension: Give students a quotient and have them create a word problem that satisfies the quotient.
