Lesson Progression
- The teacher will hand out the math sheet/ coins and ask the students to write their names and date at the top of the paper while the teacher pulls up the PowerPoint.
- T: You have learned the value of different coins. Today you will learn how to count the value of a collection, or a group, of different coins.
- The teacher will review the coins.
- T: Where have you seen people count coins? (Students will answer)
- The teacher will give the students a few examples.
- T: Often, when you’re checking out you owe a certain amount of cents. For example, Linda owes the cashier 41 cents. The quarter has a value of 25 cents. In this collection, the quarter is the coin with the greatest value. The penny has a value of 1 cent. The penny is the coin with the least value. The dime has a value of 10 cents and the nickel has a value of 5 cents.
- T: I want you to place a quarter, a dime, and a nickel at your spots. I want to know how much money you have. Work with your tables to you to find the total.
- The teacher will pull sticks and the students called on will share out loud how they counted to find the total.
- The teacher will ask the students to pull out two quarters, a dime, a nickel, and a penny. The students will be asked to identify each coin and its value, as well as naming the greatest and least valued coins and have them write their names and values down. They will then be asked to count on to find the total. Then, they will be asked to draw pictures of the 5 coins in order. The class will organize one of each coin from greatest to least. The teacher will point out that when counting a group of coins, the penny, having the least value, is always counted last.
- The teacher will help the students complete the math sheet.
- The students will be asked to complete the rest of the math sheet at their tables.
Teacher Notes
Extension: Increase the value of the coin collection OR give the students a total amount and have them produce possible combinations of coins to satisfy the value.
