Converting Measurements Stations

Students will use customary and metric measurements to measure items around the room. They will then convert the measurements to different units.

Duration

Essential Question

How can measurements be converted to different units within a system (metric or customary)?

Grade(s):

  • 5

Other Instructional Materials or Notes:

2 beakers will need to be filled with any amount of liquid. Students will need rulers, yard sticks, scratch paper, and writing utensils. Teacher will need to use tape on the ground before hand to create figures for the students to measure and convert.

Lesson Progression

1. 5 stations. 1- Area (12 in rulers), 2 - Volume (beaker), 3 - Perimeter (meter stick), 4 - Volume (beaker), 5 - Area (yard sticks).

2. Set up each station prior to start.

3. Station 1, create a regular rectangle using tape on the tile floor. Students will measure the length and width of the rectangle using inches. Then, they will find the area of the rectangle using the formula. Lastly, they will convert the area of the rectangle to feet.

4. Station 2, fill a beaker to any given volume in mL. Students will measure the volume, then convert the volume to Liters.

5. Station 3, create an irregular shape using tape on the tile floor. The shape will need to be large because students will be measuring the sides using a meter stick. Once the perimeter is found, students will convert the perimeter from meters, to centimeters and millimeters.

6. Station 4, fill a beaker to any given volume in mL. Students will measure the volume, then convert the volume to Liters and hectoliters.

7. Station 5, create a regular shape using tape on the tile floor. Students will measure the length and width of the shape using yards. Then, they will convert measurement to inches.

Teacher Notes

**Split students into heterogeneous proficiency groups and have them rotate to each station.

Differentiation: Give students the final measurements. Have them work backwards to provide the work necessary to find the measurement.

Extension: Have students create real world problems for each of the stations.
