Lesson Progression
- The students will begin at their tables. The teacher will explain that they are going to learn about cause and effect in a story.
- Before reading the text, the teacher will review the reading strategy cause and effect: Remember that an effect is what happens in a story and a cause is why that thing happens. Events in a story are often a series of cause-and-effect relationships. As you read a story, ask yourself, what happened? Why did it happen? This will help you better understand the story’s events and the order they happen in.
- The teacher will give an example of a cause and effect scenario. Then, she will give the students a cause and ask them to come up with an effect for it. The teacher will continue these examples until the students have demonstrated an understanding of cause and effect.
- Afterwards, the teacher will remind the class that fairytales are a part of the fantasy genre. She will explain that fantasy is a story that has made-up characters, settings, or other things that could not happen in real life. The teacher will ask: Based on what you see on the front cover of Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type what tells the readers that this book is a part of the fantasy genre?
- The class will begin a shared reading of Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type.
- The teacher will stop after each page to discuss the cause and effect that is happening in the story. The class will fill out the cause and effect chart as they read through the text.
- The teacher will also stop to discuss the vocabulary words found throughout the text.
- After reading the story, the teacher will allow the students to finish up their cause and effect charts.
