Lesson Progression

Day 1.

  • Students should already have some background knowledge with place value.
  • Once students have an understanding about place value, tell them that they are going to become a “human number line”. You should already have pieces of paper with different numbers from 0-9 written on each piece (resource provided with numbers already on each sheet.). Make sure to give each student a number. Begin to model how the activity will work. For example, call 4 students up their numbers may be 5,4,5,2. Tell them to create the GREATEST possible number. Allow them to work together with the other students to build the number. You may decide to do this whole group or split students into smaller groups. (Resource is posted that has possible numbers to build during this activity.)
  • To check for understanding, give students the exit slip for the day. There is a paper version available as well as a google form.

Day 2.

  • Students will begin working at the “Candy Castle.” During this activity, students will use their knowledge from yesterday’s lesson to help the Candy King fill orders for his candy company. Students will drag and drop the numbers on the Google slide to build the numbers. You may choose to have students complete this individually or you may project this on the smartboard and do a whole group activity. If you choose to do this as an individual activity, the easiest way to give students access is to assign it to Google classroom and click for each student to get their own copy of the Google slide.

Teacher Notes

Extension: Have students roll dice or use an online random number generator to pick up to 9 digits (millions place to hundredths place) and repeat the same process.

Differentiation: You may edit the Google slides are you see fit. This is a great opportunity to differentiate the clues to meet the needs of every student. To edit, simply go to "file" and "make a copy"

**Students should drag and drop the numbers to fill in the blanks.

Assessments

Exit ticked from day 1 and check student responses on Google Slide.
