Lesson Progression

Introduction (10 minutes)

Discuss the concept of change over time.
Introduce the term "rate of change" and explain its meaning.
Provide examples of rate of change (e.g., speed, growth rate, price per unit).

Exploration (20 minutes)

Provide students with a dataset of billionaires' net worth over a period of time. (Link provided in the resources tab).
Have students identify the independent and dependent variables.
Demonstrate how to calculate the rate of change between two data points.
Explain that the rate of change can be positive, negative, or zero.

Explanation (15 minutes)

Discuss the factors that can influence the rate of change of billionaires' wealth.
Explain how to analyze the rate of change over time to identify trends and patterns.
Introduce the concept of average rate of change.

Elaboration (20 minutes)

Divide students into small groups.
Assign each group a different billionaire or a specific time period.
Have students calculate the rate of change of their assigned billionaire's net worth over the given period and complete the "Analyzing Billionaires' Wealth" assignment (linked in the resources tab).
Encourage students to analyze the trends and patterns in the data.

Evaluation (5 minutes)

Have students present their findings to the class.
Discuss the similarities and differences in the rate of change of different billionaires' wealth.
Encourage peer feedback and discussion.

Teacher Notes

differentiation: Provide a smaller dataset with fewer data points. This will make it easier for students to calculate the rate of change and analyze the trends.

extension: Have students graph net worth (may need to use scientific notation). Explore different methods of calculating rate of change (e.g., using slopes of lines).
