Apples & Properties of Matter!

The teacher will tell students that they are going to learn the parts of an apple.

1. The teacher will start the lesson by:
2. a)Reading a book about apples: Apple Picking Day! (Step into Reading)  

b.)showing students a video that goes through the parts of an apple.
3. After the book and video, Teacher will ask students to think about the last time they saw or ate an apple. What did it look like? What did it smell like? What did it taste like? They will share with each other.
4. The teacher will get students to share the things they talked about and write their answers on the board
5. The teacher will tell students how they just used their prior knowledge! We know that they taste and smell sweet, they are hard and smooth, they sound crunchy when we bite into them, and they are different colors.
6. The teacher will bring out red, yellow, and green apple. The teacher will ask students what they notice about the apples.
7. The teacher will cut open the apples, and put up a diagram of the inside of an apple for the students to see the different parts.
8. The teacher will go over each part, and what it looks like.
9. The teacher will then direct the student’s attention back to the apples that were cut and have students come up and point to each part of the apple.
10. After this, students will go back to their seats and be given a worksheet with the parts of the apple on smaller pieces of paper. The students will match the parts of the apple onto the apple worksheet for practice.

I will assess the students by seeing whether or not they are able to match the parts of the apple to the correct spot of the apple worksheet. If the students are able to label it correctly, I know that they understand the concept.
