Lesson Progression
1. Begin Powerpoint on Action Verbs (found in lesson resources). Read the definition and go to slide 2.
2. As you get to slide 2, have students give examples of verbs they are already aware of or are learning. Take multiple contributions. Then, go through the examples given in the powerpoint. Have students stand up and act out each verb.
3. Explain to students the activity they will complete first:
- Split the class into two teams.
- There will be a stack of action verb cards (found in lesson resources)
- Have both teams pick a "Team Leader"
- Once team leader is chosen, a player from Team 1 picks a card from the deck.
- Player shows his/her team the card and the team decides whether one player is sufficient to act it out, or if multiple team members are necessary.
- Player(s) act out action verb in cherades manner to Team 2.
- Team 2 huddles up and discusses what the card says/what the other team is acting out.
- Many can answer aloud, but the final answer must come from the Team Leader.
- Team 2 gets three guesses before losing their turn.
- Game continues until cards run out.
- No score keeping will be necessary.
4. Have students head back to their seats and settle back down. Tell them they will be working in groups today. It may be beneficial to remind them of group activity rules.
5. Show students example of a silent film (found in lesson resources)
6. Show students example of a story board (found in lesson resources)
7. Explain to the students the purpose of the group activity and what they will be doing:
- Your group will receive a story board worksheet. (found in lesson resources)
- With your group, discuss at least 5 action verbs you would like to portray in your silent scene.
- Make sure they all make sense together so the story flows well.
- It is up to you to create a story that can be acted out in front of the class.
- Fill in the storyboard worksheet so that every scene is explicitly planned out to make filming easier.
- You, as a group, will perform your own silent movie and record it on one of your iPads (or other digital device) **optional.
- The class will be required to watch the silent film and pick out the action verbs within the film and write at least 3 sentences obtaining the action verbs after the film is finished.
8. Split the class into groups of 4 or 5.
9. Pass out worksheets and let them begin working.
10. Remind students they do not have all day, so their stories need to be short and easy so they have time to film themselves.
11. It may be easier for the teacher to record their scenes, or have students pick a person from another group to film.
12. Once students have filmed their silent films, have them email the videos to you or upload them to Google Classroom.
13. Play "Silent Film Music" aloud to the class while the students watch each other's films.
14. Have students pay close attention to films.
15. After each film is finished, the students must be able to write two-three sentences containing action verbs they witnessed or saw in the film.
For Example:
Johnny ran to Susie. Susis was playing the game outside. Johnny wanted to play, but Susie pushed him away.
16. Take up students' papers of the verbs they have written and grade them.
17. Grade each group's video using the rubric found in lesson resources.
