Battle At Champion's Hill | Walter Edgar's Journal - Episode 3

Kaltura

In this segment, Winston Groom talks about how Grant’s forces had to “live off the land,” since their supplies were taken months before.  General Grant takes his forces to Jackson, Mississippi, where Confederate General John Pemberton engages Grant in the “Battle at Champion Hill.” The result of the battle forces Pemberton's Confederate forces to retreat back to Vicksburg, where they prepare for the imminent siege. Groom then discusses Grant’s binge drinking between the engagements.
