Fortune Springs Garden, named in honor of Pompeii Fortune, was a slave owned by Captain John Buchanan, during the American Revolution. After serving the Marquis de Lafayette as a valet, Fortune returned to the U.S., where he was freed, and became a rice and indigo farmer.
