The heart of Walterboro is the Colleton County Courthouse, a Greek Revival style building designed by Robert Mills. It was here where in June, 1828, where Robert Barnwell Rhett delivered an address, calling for South Carolinians to resist federally imposed tariff laws.
The hurricane of 1879 destroyed all six of Walterboro’s original churches, but the townspeople rallied and built new houses of worship. Some of them still standing today are St. Jude’s Episcopal Church, the Church of the Atonement, and the third Saint James the Greater Roman Catholic Church.
