Sumter, Part 4 - Church of the Holy Cross | Palmetto Places

The Church of the Holy Cross, completed in 1852, is located outside of Sumter, South Carolina, near the old community of Stateburg. This church is known for its unusual construction method: built from rammed earth, or "pise` de terre", a method dating back to ancient Mesopotamia.  This material was not only inexpensive, but made the church a sturdy, fireproof structure.
