Sumter, Part 1 - History | Palmetto Places

Sumter, South Carolina, originally established as "Sumterville" in 1800, was named after the Revolutionary War hero, General Thomas Sumter, who earned the nick-name "Gamecock" during the war. This is where the University of South Carolina got its mascot. In 1912, Sumter, S.C., made history when it became the first municipality to adopt the council-manager form of government. Several popular tourist destinations in Sumter include the Sumter Gallery of Art, and the Sumter Museum.
