Pritchard's Island - Nature Reserve | 27:Fifty (1992) - Episode 2

Kaltura

Pritchard’s Island, which is off the coast of Beaufort, South Carolina, is one of hundreds of barrier reef islands scattered along the entire southeastern coast. Pritchard’s Island is only accessible by boat. Atlanta businessman Philip Rhodes donated the island to the University of South Carolina in 1983, on the conditions that the island be used for coastal research, and not be developed commercially.  The preservation of loggerhead sea turtles is one of the main research projects on the island. Students and researchers will take turtle eggs and transport them to a safer place, protecting the eggs from high tides and hungry predators. The island remains a research laboratory where people can study marine ecology and oceanography.
