Making Pottery - Step 4 | A Natural State - Episode 5

Kaltura

Decorating Clay

Founded in 1785, Edgefield boasts a proud revolutionary war history. Abner Landrum is said to have established the first shop in the region around 1810 and the fact that he named his sons after the great names in Old World decorative pottery such Wedgwood, Palissey and Manises is indicative of his wide ranging knowledge of ceramics and decoration. In keeping the Edgefield style of clay pottery alive, Stephen Ferrell uses the glaze and slip decoration procedures used by the early Edgefield potters. Some of the symbols of glory from the distant revolutionary period are reflected in Stephen’s decorations as in remembrance of those times.
