Fort Sumter: Construction Of Fort Sumter (Produced 1995) - Episode 1

After the War of 1812, the U.S. government deemed the East coast as vulnerable.  Congress decided that a series of coastal defenses was necessary.  Plans were made to construct a fort at the mouth of Charleston Harbor, to increase the city’s defenses.  The U.S. military thought at the time that combined fire from Forts Moultrie and Sumter would create an effective defensive enfilade, making it difficult for enemy ships to enter Charleston Harbor.  Construction began on Fort Sumter in 1827. A series of setbacks delayed the construction of the fort.
