Fort Sumter (3): April 12, 1861

At 4:30 in the morning, on April 12, 1861, a shot fired from Fort Johnson signaled the beginning of the Civil War.  Miraculously, during the thirty four hour engagement, no one was killed. Major Robert Anderson was forced to surrender the fort, due to lack of supplies, and offensive capabilities.  On April 14th, the first casualty of the Civil War was caused by a cannon firing prematurely.
