Glaciers reshaped much of Wisconsin’s landscape. As these glaciers retreated, the glacial drift left behind rocks, sand, and other glacial material. Earth scientists mapped areas where this drift is present in order to recreate the history of glacial activity. A glacial mystery presented itself to scientists when drift mapping revealed an area in western Wisconsin which did not have any glacial drift material. What is the story of the “Driftless Area”?
