The Dahlonega Gold Rush | 27:Fifty (1992) - Episode 1

Dahlonega, in the Cherokee Indian language, means “yellow precious metal.” As its name suggests, Dahlonega was the site of the first gold rush in the United States. Gold was discovered here in the 1820’s, some twenty years before gold was discovered in California.

Some residents of Dahlonega have ancestors who participated in this first gold rush. Some descendants of the original miners still live in Dahlonega today, and still continue to search for gold.
