Archaeologist Calvin Jones of the Florida Department of Archives and History found the winter encampment of Hernando DeSoto. Chain mail used by DeSoto's men did not defend them because the arrows used by the Indians would splinter and go through the holes in the chain mail. Burlap garments with overlapping layers or quilted cloth worked better as a defense than chain mail.
