Sandlapper Magazine called Cheraw an “ideal, idyllic, picket-fence place.”  Several notable homes in Cheraw include the Lafayette home, and the Teacherage, the oldest dwelling in Cheraw, dating back before 1790. During the Civil War, General William T. Sherman claimed the Hartsell house as his headquarters during the Union occupation of Cheraw.
