Abbeville is known as the "cradle and grave of the Confederacy." It was here at the Burt-Stark mansion, home of Confederate Major Armistead Burt, where Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America, or C.S.A., found sanctuary. This is the location where the Confederacy's council of war convened for the last time, before the end of the Civil War. The decision for the Confederacy to surrender happened here in this home. Today, it is a museum, and popular tourist attraction, filled with priceless antiques and artifacts from the Antebellum era.
