The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, proudly cherishes its military and Southern traditions. But, like other colleges, The Citadel also faces the challenge of recruiting both potential...Ever since mankind first looked up into the sky, we have always wanted to find out more about the stars, and the universe. Mankind has designed a tool for closer examination of the heavens: the telescope. Over the centuries, scientists such as Galileo Galilei, and Sir Isaac Newton have improved upon the design. Telescopes are one of the most important tools for scientists and astronomers. Today, astronomers are limited only by the time able to observe, and the stamina to do so.
Follow astronomy professors Saul Adelman, of The Citadel, and Bob Dukes, of the College of Charleston, and the development of the Automatic Photo-Electric Telescope (A.P.T.) by Russ Janae and Lou Boyd. With this new telescope, and computer software, astronomers can not only gather exponentially more data, but can also make stargazing more compatible around the world! The APT was a cooperative culmination between engineers, and, both amateur and professional astronomers. After the development of the original APTs, there is a plan to mass produce the design, with the end goal of making a world-wide network of APTs and computers, for non-stop surveillance and analysis of the universe. This new APT technology can also provide more educational, and career opportunities for students.
