Dahlonega (Georgia)

Join host Jim Welch as he takes viewers through the town of Dahlonega, Georgia. Dahlonega, in the Cherokee Indian language, means “yellow precious metal.” As its name suggests, Dahlonega was the site of the first gold rush in the United States. Gold was discovered here in the 1820’s, some twenty years before gold was discovered in California.  “The House That Bingo Built” tells the story of how the Seminole Native Americans in Florida became financially independent by hosting bingo games. Residents living in sea island communities off the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina seek fellowship in small churches known as “Praise Houses.”
