Diospyros virginiana
• Native to Eastern United States
• Distinctive dark thick bark
• Leaves somewhat thickened
• Leaves egg shaped and not toothed
• Yellow flowers
• Grows up to 50 feet tall
• Contains oblong leaves and unisexual flowers
• Fruits orange colored and edible when ripe
• Ripe fruit delicious; green fruit can cause mouth to "pucker"
• Fruit is the size of an apricot
• Wood is used for shuttles and bobbins in the textile industry
• Eaten by mammals and birds
• Habitat includes uplands
