Description

Typha latifolia

  • Common aquatic plant
  • Named for foot long hot dog-shaped flower spike
  • Upright smooth stiff stems grow to 10 feet
  • Alternate, elongated strap-like leaves
  • Thick underground branching rhizomes
  • Flowers June to August
  • Dry, thin-walled fruit does not split open when ripe
  • Food for Muskrats, Beavers and Geese
  • Provides nesting sites and cover for Red-winged Blackbirds, Marsh Wren and other waterfowl
  • Habitats include marshes, ponds, lakes and streams
