USC Sumter Science Camp | Carolina Classrooms

Kaltura

USC Sumter’s Mad About Science Camp took place June 26-30. Kids had the opportunity to conduct science experiments, build rockets and learn about technologies such as gel electrophoresis.

The Greenwood Genetic Center brought their Gene Machine Mobile Science Laboratory for a day to teach kids about chromosomes and extracting DNA.

According to camp leader and Senior Instructor of Biology at USC Sumter Dr. Daniel Kiernan, activities like genetic experiments and frog dissection were designed to teach kids about anatomy, genetics, physics, chemistry, biology and much more.

“We just try to cover all those different aspects of STEM,” he says. “What we try to do at science camp is expose them to as many different kinds of science disciplines as possible…and then let them try to determine what they’re excited about and grow off that excitement."

Look for information about summer camps at USC Sumter on their website www.USCSumter.edu in the spring. If your child is interested in attending next year’s camp, Dr. Kiernan suggests you sign up early. There was a waiting list this year.
