Begin Your Research | National Book Month

Look for an interesting spot to begin your research. It might be a place where you see lots of activity -- a pond, a garden, or a bunch of flowers, for example. Or it might be a place that needs to be explored a bit more closely. Get on your hands and knees and look at a very small area like a puddle or in the grass.

What do you see? What do you smell? What do you hear? If it does not sting or bite (watch out for poison oak and ivy!), what does it feel like? In your field journal, write down these observations.
